10 x 100 sprint paddlebacks
I thought I went pretty well, glided well on strokes.
Took me the first 4 to get into it
Not much else to say.
I hate Jono's boat.

Saturday 20th Dec
Today was pretty awesome like yesterday
I was able to put a lot of the stuff we did last night into practice.
1st race - Started well, Jono's steering cable came loose and as a result kind of came into me, but didn't slow me too much.
2nd race was good, able to get onto Trav's wash for a little while, kept good speed after i dropped off.
3rd race Trav wen't nuts, Jon became incapacitated and Jono sat on my wash the entire time and then sprinted me off at the end, major dog. Trav timed us, got about 12min flat
Really liked how i went, kept about the same pace as the sprints last night, which was pretty easy to do as my stroke rate was much lower.

Today was a good session.
2 x 10 lots of 15sec sprint, 45 sec rest.
Took me a while to get into the technique you wanted us to do, but once i did, i really excelled.
Barely had to go hard and i was flying.
I used the amount of sound my strokes made to indicate how good my catch was.
only downer was that when I did another couple of starts with Trav at the end, I couldn't replicate it nearly as well.

Wednesday 17th Dec
Okay today's session was hard and fast.
3 x {4 x 250} sprint
First set for a change, went well.
Second set again was my best one, you reminded us to keep a bit of space between our strokes and this really worked for me, at least on the first one.
Third set it started to kick into me that my forearms were absolutely killing me, blocked off my power, went crap.
My hands are loose but it does nothing, becoming a real problem.

Today went on a bike ride with the other buds
Pretty damn hard, Travis led us through some tracks at Lysterfield, considering the last time I got on a bike was a few years ago, I didn't fare very well.
Went for 2 hours mostly solid
Now my ass hurts.
And my legs are jelly.

Wednesday 15th Dec
Today's session was pretty good
Reminded myself about keeping my blade vertical and this led to a nice change in technique, as I'd obviously forgotten about it. I was able to slow my stroke rate right down while maintaining speed.
On the starts it felt I had something missing, and when we tried the altered starts with progression of speed and power I really lost focus of what I was doing and pretty much messed it up completely. Kept on looking at my damn knees for some reason, stroke rate was too slow at the start, my emphasis on keeping a 'clean stroke' actually just had me going very slow.
I'll need to try that a few more times.

Today's focus was wash packs
So that's what we did.
Travis is very powerful, found it hard to get on his wash even though he was barely straining.
Again, need more power if I'm to become a threat to him, or to be a competent partner in a double with him.
Trav has agreed to swim with me after the Murray

The weekend of the 7th and 8th Dec
Saturday
Alright race, took the third leg, 23km.
Doing pretty well until I fell in as a boat sped past, disappointing, but grabbed a nice wash which I took for most of the rest of the race.
Really need to get more fit I think, just seem to be getting too tired too early.
Thinking about getting in the pool for some extra sessions, Casey opened a new squad for those who just want to keep fit basically, I think it could be good, trying to talk Trav into joining me.
Sunday
Easy recovery
Worked on a bit of technique inbetween manoeuvring the snags of death.
Sizzled my hands, annoying.

Today's session was a repeat of the last with changeovers at the end.
the set of 2 x {4 x 250} was a ripper again.
Really had to put a great deal of power in to get anywhere.
placed second/third about.
The changeovers were nice and smooth
Again, did better in the second set than the first.

Saturday 29th Nov
I type this with mutilated hands.
20km race
Ended up in a pack with Burkey and Jono, although I'm disappointed that I didn't keep with Trav and Jon when they broke on the first turn.
I did feel a little niggle from my right forearm during the 2nd and 3rd laps, but I was able to loosen it out and prevent it from tightening right up.
Got tipped out by Burkey again on the 6th lap, got back in and joined back with them, feeling a lot more rigid and hateful of everything in the world.
On the very last turn Trav thought he might come and paddle with us to the end, although he just screwed everything up, giving Burkey a lovely wash while completely cutting off Jono.
Finished even with burkey.
Good session I guess.

Today was short, hard and fast.
2x { 4 x 250 }
All hard.
They were quite on and off, I went better on the second set, almost keeping up with Trav on a few. Got heaps more connection which allowed tonnes more power.
Really liked the intensity.
I developed a better and stronger start when we practised them, I stayed completely even with Trav on the last start.

What a day
LD - Pretty crap, although I caught back up to Jono at the final length.
K1 500 final was pretty good, came second to Trav and Reed, strangely for one of the few times I was able to hold relatively good technique and balance despite the horrendous conditions.
Organising and tying on the boats was an exercise in itself.
All in all, pretty short day.

8 x 300
Speed: 70/80/90/80 90/100/90/100
Pretty good session, I noticed my technique improve the more vertical I made my blade.
Placed well in comparison on the 80% and 90% ones, but for some reason I can't make the jump to 100%
Don't really know why.
Anyway, short, sharp, good session.

Pretty hard set.
Technique was of mixed sorts as usual, sometimes (mostly against the wind) it would feel great, really easy. But on quite a few it just felt like I was pulling water, really sluggish.

Not the best session.
9 laps. Run on laps 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7
Started off with Jon, but once Trav came along and an ill choice of wash position, I quickly dropped off. Spent the rest of the session with Burkey.
Technique was a bit strange, at the start it was very shaky in my legs, almost like the first time you get in a K1, although I wasn't falling out of course.
Got better, but my speed didn't increase much.

Quite hot
Main:
16 x 500 on 2:30
Got between 10 and 20 seconds rest for each
Technique over the first few was brilliant, able to keep up with Trav but over time it detereorated. A hard session, but it just doesn't have that edge which really destroys me. Most likely because we are still doing base training.
There were a couple of start line issues, but this was more of a result from the small amount of time we had to turn around.
Averaged 2nd/3rd place, although mainly 3rd.
Very disappointed with my lack of speed over the middle bulk of the 500's, my wrist problem arose again and I could not shake it.
Learning about the path of the paddle opened up a large amount of options which I observed when paddling standing up, and I found it very hard to be able to discern what was right and what was wrong.
6/10 session

P.S. the 6/10 session is about my performance, not the quality of the session, just in case there was confusion.

Monday 10th Nov
Today we did another simple variation of last Monday's paddle.
3min on (level 2 high)
2min off (level 2 low)
Not very interesting, our pace was painfully slow.
Got a little bit of technique work.
The pad did have an effect in making me feel higher in the water, and it felt like it was easier to glide. The sacrifice of balance was also noticeable, and hurt the starts that we did.
About your comment, don't know what a seated row is. The bent over row I know all too well.
Overall, bit of an ordinary session, nothing special.

Egh,
Today we had another 5km time trial, and yet again I failed to meet my expectations
25:31
Did not like it at all, despite how good I felt technique-wise beforehand. None of it came out in my time. Wrist hurt a lot, main reason why my power went down. Not sure how to fix it, if I loosen my hand, how do I get more power through the water?
It seems logical that if I pull harder, more pressure will be on my fingers which strains my wrist flexors.
Overall, crap.

OBAMA!
Tonight's session I paddled with Jon in the AK
16 x 500 on 2:30
Got a nice 30-40 seconds rest from the moment we finished
Beat the other guys every time
Technique was good, although the same problem encountered in my race with Trav happened with Jon and I. Backscratching. This limited me technically.
Over the last few 500's, I worked on getting a full twist, exaggerating. Although my twist exaggerated is probably what I should be doing normally. Either way, it felt good, and there was a noticeable change in the amount of leg drive I was putting in and the lessened strain on my arms.
Another good session.

Saturday 1st Nov and Monday 3rd Nov
Start with Saturday
8 laps
Run on lap 2, 4, 6
Pretty good session, worked with Jon. We made it our goal to keep Jono and Burkey at bay (who worked together but started behind us) which we were successful in doing, increasing the lead substantially in the final 2 laps
Didn't focus too much on technique, although that doesn't mean it was horrible
Overall good session
Monday
Today we did 2 min on, 3 min off
low intensity, swapping between level 2 low and level 2 high
Worked on technique for first part, mainly on keeping it consistent during both paces
Trav commented on my high rating, this prompted me to work on lowering my rating. I upped my air time which did make it harder to balance, but of course practise would reduce that.
Overall another good session.

Friday 31st Oct
Okayyyy
Today was an easier paddle
Started with 2 lap warmup, tried to work on getting back that technique but today it just wasn't happening, which is annoying.
Did some practise as a wash pack, nothing exciting
Then some more Indian File. On this I got some good power and connection but it was not consistent and hard to keep for more than 10 doubles without becoming the slightest bit unbalaced, which of course ruined the flow.
Hoping to get some padding in my seat soon, to elevate me in my seat and also give my poor non-existent ass a bit of a breather.
In time, the hill runs should increase my ass size from non-existent to small.
New Goal: Increase ass size to a perfect equilibrium by both keeping my ass from being sore and pleasing the ladies with its toned curvature.

Mmm
14 x 500 on 2:30
For the first 5 I felt great, really smooth, technique felt awesome. I was barely putting in any power and my stroke rate was low, but I still kept up a consistent 2nd placing.
Got a little bit tired through the forearm again, annoying as it brought me down getting either 2nd or 3rd.
Main highlight was repeating some of that great technique again.
Although I need to integrate some further rotation when going faster.
Happy with the session

Monday 27th of Oct
At the start of this session, my technique felt horrific and on the whole I just wasn't feeling good.
We did wash riding with Pete, I was in the V for the majority and this impacted on my performance, I was very focused on keeping myself in the right position and as a result I had a high rating as I constantly righted myself. After that we did some slow drill/technique work. I did pause paddling and this helped massively. I felt very comfortable after a while and I could feel my technique had improved (although it came and went during the half lap)
It has come to my attention that, like swimming, I require a much larger than normal warmup to become comfortable in my boat. May be part of the explanation for my less than satisfactory races of late (and an explanation for why I bounced back so hard in the second race with Travis at Geelong; I had a 10km warmup).

Saturday 18th Oct and Sunday Geelong Race
Just an easy session, 2 laps K1, 2 laps K2.
K2 with Trav felt pretty good, nice and balanced, good flow.
Sunday
Geelong 5 & 10km Champs
K1: terrible, not sure why at the moment.
K2: with Trav, a lot better technique, very fast and kept with those Open men, even though they were just cruising. Although our potential together wasn't fully used, steering was off, limiting Travis' leg drive to nothing, and in the small amount of time we had to set up the boat, my seat position was not optimal, limiting my leg drive as well. Also, because my seat and footplate were forward and Trav was all the way back in the seat, I could not get a long extension and catch, or much of a twist. Travis' big fat body was in the way.
Still, pretty sweet race, made up for the crap K1 race.

Friday 17th Oct
Tonight, Pete was not present, so Travis and I did some wash riding and Indian File with Michael. I got some good connection during the Indian File. We then finished with some balancing drills which I think really helped.
Not much else to say.
Except after trialling Michael's and Travis' boat, I can conclude that my boat is forever more awesome.

Wednesday 15th Oct
Tonight I was a bit late, as a result of driving 1km and realising there was no kayak ontop of the car.
Tiny warmup, 1/4 of a lap
Main: 12 x 1000m 80-85% on 5:30
Didn't do as well as previous weeks with this set, the cause most likely being SIS Athletics the day before, running not being my thing. Very sore from that.
Only the 9th felt good, technique-wise.
I'm getting very heavy and tight through my forearms, most likely doing something wrong with the positioning of my wrists.
